Nice graphics, good setting in a steampunk-type world. The gameplay may be a little repetitive, but the availability of upgrades and changing your loadout helps to keep things interesting. Escort missions can be a little too challenging and aggravating to redo, though.

I admit, I bought the game expecting it to be something else than it actually was. I was hoping for an Age of Booty kinda game. It wasn't.

This is one of those twin-stick shooters. I say this in this fashion because: this game has basically "been done". It's Geometry Wars. All over again. On water. It's not unlike Aegis Wing, which is free, so maybe you should check that one out instead.

There are some enjoyable things about the game though: the pace isn't as frantic as some other scrolling shooters, there are great avatar items to be won, there is a nice story arc in the game and did I say that there are great avatar items to be won?

Steampunk Rock!

I’m generally not very good at two-stick shooters and Aqua is essentially falls in that category, but because it is a slower pace than say Geometry Wars I did not have my usual troubles. I really enjoyed Aqua overall. There are three different ships to use and each has a variety of weapons to choose from. The speedboat is fast but has the weakest weapons. The cruiser is a bit slower but has stronger weapons, and then the gunboat has heavy weapons and armor but moves slower. You do have the option with all three to apply some upgrades to increase firepower or speed and there is a boost option. So, you can offset some of the limitations of each ship with the upgrades. Personally I like taking the heavy ship and using upgrades to make the attacks even more powerful. That way I can finish off enemies really quickly. Combining this build out with a squad of fighter ships let me play very aggressively. There are also healing, sonar and artillery squad you can choose to have assist you if you find you need help on the defensive side.

The campaign follows the ship’s captain and engineer as they uncover a new enemy threat and deal with it. The story and voice acting are both a little cheesy but I enjoyed them. They fit with the steam-punk art style. I really enjoyed the cut-scenes between missions because there are done in a hand drawn comic style. Playing through on normal it probably only took me like 5 hours, but I will probably go back through and find the missing collectibles. In addition to the main story there are single player skirmish modes as well as multiplayer co-op and verses modes.

The skirmish modes remind me a little of Horde or Firefight modes in Gears of War or ODST. You start on Wave 1 with a single weapon as waves of enemies attack you earn upgrades and weapons to use. If you can get to wave 26 you earn one of the few non-campaign based achievements. There are three different skirmish modes that feature different level types but still with the objective of taking out all the enemies.

Overall Aqua is a fun game although not especially long, but the multiplayer and co-op modes can extend the live of the game if you have a friend to play with.
