Rockford and Crystal, heroes of Boulder Dash, one of the greatest classic video games, get their bits and bytes together to make their Next Gen-Debut. Back in the 80’s, when hairstyles were wild, music was electronic and video games were sold on Music Cassettes in Europe (yes, it’s really true!), Boulder Dash won our hearts by storm. The creative and frantic gameplay mix required both our reflexes and brains to avoid murderous rock slides of Boulders and get our hands on those precious Diamonds in 20 fun-filled Caves infested by Fireflies, Butterflies and Amoebas. In 2011 our childhood heroes take it to the Caves again on Xbox 360 in Boulder Dash - XL! Leaving the essence of what we all love about Rockford’s classic quest for Diamonds intact, Boulder Dash returns Next Gen-Style, with new, exciting Game Modes, Gameplay Elements, Monsters and more Diamonds to snatch than ever before!

Boulder Dash XL!!!

I haven't played the original version of this game, but when I played it on the Xbox Live Arcade Channel I fell in love with it. First it seems easy but it does get harder as you progress, but if you are in for a challenge I suggest the Classic Mode.

This definitely is a gem and for 800MSP!

I say try it out, but you should definitely be thinking on purchasing it.

MyQuestion:
Why was this release on the same day that the hyped out Twisted Pixel Game "Ms. SPlosion Man?" That is why there sales went horribly, and barely sold anything.

Great remake of a classic

Boulder Dash is possible the very first video game I played as a kid. And I played it a lot. I never completed the game but I spent countless hours playing. So, when I heard there was a remake in the works I was pretty excited. Boulder Dash-XL is a lot of fun to play. They made things easier than the original by not killing you when a diamond falls on your head, but I’m ok with that since I actually can beat levels this time around. Plus, if I want the extra challenge the original game is also included in the $10 price.

In addition to the standard adventure mode there are also Puzzle, Zen and Time Challenge modes to keep things interesting. There are also a ton of levels included and while most can be completed in a few tries the game still has a lot of content. I’ve been playing regularly since it released and still have not completed all of them. The game does a good job of introducing new enemies and mechanics slowly, and then having levels that incorporate the new item get more and more challenging. I like this setup because it lets me master each new thing one at a time verses just throwing them all at me at once.

The one thing I am not really a fan of is the graphical style. The level components themselves look fine but the shiny rocks/crystals that make up the edge of each level are fairly grating after a while. Fortunately, Boulder Dash-XL is great for playing a few levels here and there. The levels are designed well with a nice difficulty progression that always has me feeling challenges without getting overly frustrated.

I also like that I can play Boulder Dash-XL with my son. He loves both watching me and trying to play himself. Although it goes a lot better if he just tells me where to go and I do the actually running. He actually loves telling me where the Exit for each level is. Which comes in handy on some of the larger levels when I get lost. There is an option where you can pause the game and look around with the camera, but I tend not to do that in the moment.

If you like action puzzle games then be sure to check out Boulder Dash-XL. There is a lot of content here for $10 and it is fun for all ages.
