All Zombies Must Die!

Twin stick shooters and zombies can be found in abundance nowadays but All Zombies Must Die! brings some things to the table to make it more enjoyable.One that has plenty of features to keep you mowing down the undead hordes of smalltown USA for some time.

First you have some RPG-lite features. Each zombie you kill will net you some XP points that will go towards leveling up. Each Level Up will get you some attribute points to distribute between the usual fare of Health, Attack Power, Defense, Health etc. This combined with being able to swap between multiple characters (allowing you a different build with each one if you desire) gives a rewarding pace to the constant slaughter.

Adding on to the RPG-lite elements is a simple system of Item Creation and Crafting. Each stage has a certain crafting ingredient that can be obtained (over and over if you like to grind things out) from completed an optional side objective. This includes things like Burning Torches for killing 30 Zombies with flame attacks or a Megaphone for killing 30 Zombies with Sonic attacks. These items can then be combined with the weapons you find throughout the game to make special versions. Sonic Shotguns? You bet. Flaming Chainsaws? Yep.

There is also 4 player Drop-In/Out Co-Op for the game. As of the time of this review I have not been able to test out the Co-Op features but I have heard good things.

The story is one of video game self aware absurdness. The characters make reference that this is a game and crack jokes and all the usual stereotypes and tropes. The humor is clever if not that great. It was enough to get a chuckle or two out of me. The cartoony graphics and character movements look nice and compliment the humorous style quite nicely.

There are few things that hold back the game from being great in my eyes. Sometimes it is just too easy to get swarmed by zombies and it is in these situations that the hit detection seems to take a dive. Sometimes your melee strikes will go straight through a few and if that happens enough it can mean an early death. Combine this with some odd camera angles in some areas and it can prove to be as frustrating as it is fun. These scenarios aren't that common but did crop up now and again.

All things considered I think All Zombies Must Die! is a game worth playing. If you can find 3 other buddies to go Zombie Hunting with the few minor quibbles can definitely be overlooked.
