WHERE ARE THESE PLACES? :(

One of the most obvious signs that you live in America is how horrible you are at geography when it doesn't involve American soil. Sure, we can find Russia, China, Japan and MAYBE a couple European countries, but anywhere else outside of the Americas (and that's giving us some credit with South America that might not be due) and we're screwed. So when I was asked to review Around The World I think I did it out of a duty to find out more about the non-US countries. Well, at least where they are.

Around The World is a sort of fast-paced geography quiz. You're given four cities at all times (one assigned to each face button) and told to go find them. A is easy (and usually in North America or Western Europe), X and B are slightly more difficult, and Y is hard enough that for someone who sucks at geography as much as I do it may as well be a fictional land like Lalatopolis, Moonland or something. I'd probably have a better chance finding it. Anyway, you have a time limit to hit a certain amount of points, which you earn by doing what I can't do and point remotely close to the location of the city. Closer you are, more points you earn. Likewise with the difficulty. Stick that cursor too far away and you not only don't earn any points but also lose a second of your time. Snag the target amount of points, you go to the next level.

ATW's visuals have its definite ups and downs. Unfortunately, the downs are during play. The giant world map is large and detailed enough that if you don't stink at geography like I do you should be able to know where you're pointing, and if you're unsure you can zoom in. The downside is the cycle of day. For aesthetic purposes the developer decided to have the map get lighter and darker to simulate the passage of time. Obviously, it gets more difficult to see at night, and you have two equally bad options during this. One is to leave it alone and deal with a darker map and potential headache and eye strain. The other is to have the country boundaries light up at night and have everything look horrid in addition to just one gigantic ball of white in the more country-dense areas. Believe me, Europe isn't kind to you at night no matter what. On a more pleasant note, you get to unlock pictures by doing well, and the pictures are all high def and look pretty on your screen. The developer even included a screen saver using these if you feel like leaving your 360 on for music or something. A brief note about the game's sounds: they aren't rewarding. Even hitting somewhat close to a city and snagging a 2x bonus doesn't produce a very nice sound and makes you think you did something wrong. When you're low enough on self-esteem when dealing with geography, like I am, this makes you a sad panda.

There isn't much to say about the controls. You can move your cursor, move it faster, zoom in, and of course choose what city you're actually pointing at. Just make sure you're pressing the correct button. I hit "A" a lot more than I really wanted to, thanks to every other game on the planet.

As far as gameplay, what I said is really all there is. There isn't any multiplayer to be found, though to be fair I'd just follow my girlfriend's cursor around all day anyway since I'm a cheating jerk and horrible with non-US territories. However, the completionist in you will be thrilled to know that there are a LOT of pictures to unlock and, because of that, a lot of scores and correct answer streaks to try for. And, of course, you get to go for your high score. That might not seem like much, but giving you something to shoot for gives a glorified geography quiz a bit of addiction.

Lots of games have the warning, "Your Mileage May Vary". This game definitely has that warning as, if geography isn't your thing, you might want to steer clear. If it is, however, or if you are in dire want and need of knowing where places are outside of your own backyard (LIKE ME), you can get a decent bit of fun out of the 80 Points you throw into this, and you may just learn something as well. This day and age, I truly think that's worth something.

Now, if you'll excuse me, where in the heck is Carmen Sandiego?
